Intel outs new single chip capable of teraflop performance

I've been piddling with tech since I was in grade school. Thinking back to that old Tandy computer I had as a kid and comparing it to the 6-core beast we have on desktops today it's amazing how tech has changed over the decades. I often wonder what sort of tech my kids will be toting around 20 years from now. Intel has a new chip that hits at what the future will be like.

The latest chip from Intel is a 1-teraflop beast that has over 50-cores. Intel is testing the processor inside a computer at the SC11 supercomputer conference in Seattle. The little chip that is pushing out so much performance is the size of a matchbook and called Knights Ferry. The architecture of the chip is called many integrated core or MIC.

To put a bit of perspective on the teraflop number, that means that the chip is capable of a trillion floating-point operations per second. The photo above is of a slide from the presentation that sums things up nicely. The Knights Bridge chip needs a single PCIe slot to hit 1TF. Back in 1997 to hit 1TF performance took 9,298 Pentium II Xeon processors and 72 cabinets. How's that for progress?

Intel 4004, world's first commercial microprocessor, celebrates 40th birthday

via Engadget by Amar Toor on 11/15/11

Pull out the candles and champagne, because the Intel 4004 is celebrating a major birthday today -- the big four-oh. That's right, it's been exactly four decades since Intel unveiled the world's first commercially available CPU, with an Electronic News ad that ran on November 15th, 1971. It all began in 1969, when Japan's Nippon Calculating Machine Corporation asked Intel to create 12 chips for its Busicom 141-PF calculator. With that assignment, engineers Federico Faggin, Ted Hoff and Stanley Mazor set about designing what would prove to be a groundbreaking innovation -- a 4-bit, 16-pin microprocessor with a full 2,300 MOS transistors, and about 740kHZ of horsepower. The 4004's ten micron feature size may seem gargantuan by contemporary standards, but at the time, it was rather remarkable -- especially considering that the processor was constructed from a single piece of silicon. In fact, Faggin was so proud of his creation that he decided to initial its design with "FF," in appropriate recognition of a true work of art. Hit up the coverage links below for more background on the Intel 4004, including a graphic history of the microprocessor, from the Inquirer.

White House denies alien contact

The fact that the US government (it already sounds as a conspiracy) needed a formal declaration rather than a simple dismissal of the issue is proof by itself that it not only has proof for extraterrestrial life, but indication that there has been also contact, treaties and non-disclosure agreements with the aliens.

NASA developing tractor beams, no plans for Death Star... yet (video)

Fully functional LightSabre aside, a tractor beam has to be high on most geek wish-lists; lucky for you NASA has started working on one. Before you drop your sandwich (or whatever that object in your left hand is), this won't be for sucking up star cruisers, but the more modest task of sample and space dust collection. The basic concept has already been proven, but now NASA's Office of the Chief Technologist has given boffins $100,000 to make the dream a reality. Three potential methods are already on the table, which in lay-terms resemble laser tweezers, a light vortex and a conceptual rippling beam. Once developed, it could signal the end of traditional mechanical sample collecting -- and just plain luck -- consigning robotic arms to the history books. Check the video after the break for science-tastic mock up of how it might work.

Asus Transformer Prime tablet snapped with new keyboard dock in tow

nicely done

via SlashGear by Shane McGlaun on 10/27/11

Like many geeks today, we have a soft spot for tablets. Not just any tablet mind you, only tablets that are cool. The new Asus Transformer Prime tablet is certainly cool and the tablet has turned up in some new pictures. The new pics show the tablet with a new keyboard dock. We don't have all the details on the Transformer Prime at this point, but we do have a bunch of rumors about what the tablet will have inside.

The Prime is expected to sport a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip inside and run the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. The tablet has an aluminum frame and the big feature is the keyboard dock that turns the tablet into a notebook so you can type faster and more comfortably. The keyboard the dock uses appears to be your standard Asus fare with chicklet keys and an irritatingly small right shift key.

Other things about the tablet include a 10-inch screen, audio ports, micro-HDMI output and a microSD card slot. The official announcement and full specs of the machine are expected on November 9. I hope the tablet lives up to the rumors and doesn't cost a fortune, it looks pretty cool.
